What Does a Truck Dispatcher Do? (And Do Owner-Operators Really Need One?)

By Abadi Dispatch · November 8, 2026 · 3 min read

If you just got your authority or you're tired of spending hours on load boards between drives, you've probably wondered whether a dispatcher is worth it. Here is what a truck dispatcher actually does, how they're paid, and how to decide if one makes sense for you.

What a truck dispatcher does

An independent dispatcher works on behalf of the carrier (you), not the broker. Day to day, that usually means:

A good dispatcher never forces a load on you. You always have the final say on accepting or declining.

Dispatcher vs. freight broker: not the same thing

A freight broker works for the shipper and makes money on the difference between what the shipper pays and what the carrier gets. A dispatcher works for the carrier and is paid by the carrier, so the dispatcher's job is to get you the best rate. A dispatcher shouldn't be taking a hidden cut from the broker side.

How dispatchers get paid

Most independent dispatch services charge one of two ways:

ModelHow it worksGood for
PercentageA percentage of each load's gross rate, commonly somewhere in the 5%–10% rangeCarriers who want the dispatcher motivated to get higher rates
Flat feeA set weekly or per-load fee no matter the rateHigh-revenue trucks where a percentage would cost more

With a percentage model, the dispatcher only earns when you haul, which keeps everyone aligned. Always get the fee in writing in a dispatch agreement before you start.

Signs you'd benefit from a dispatcher

When you might not need one

If you already have steady dedicated freight or direct shippers paying good rates, and you enjoy booking your own loads, you may not need a dispatcher. Some carriers start with a dispatcher, learn the market, and later book some loads themselves.

How Abadi Dispatch works

We're built by someone who has driven trucks and dispatched them. You sign a simple dispatching agreement, we book loads that fit your truck, send you every rate confirmation for approval, and you pay a set percentage only on loads you haul. No upfront fees.
